European Testing Week: free screening week for sexually transmitted infections from May 19 to 26, 2025

Bionext ETW

From May 19 to 26, 2025, BIONEXT is taking part in European Testing Week in Luxembourg. For one week, our screening tests for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) will be available free of charge, without appointment or prescription, in all our laboratories and via our LABOMOBILE service

What is European Testing Week?

This European initiative aims to promote prevention and facilitate access to free, over-the-counter testing for all Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).

Why is this week so important?

In Europe, 1 in 5 people living with HIV are unaware of their status. In 2023, the Ministry of Health and Social Security is warning of a sharp rise in the number of bacterial STIs in Luxembourg. Gonococcal infections (gonorrhea) have risen by 27.6%, syphilis by 16% and chlamydia by 6.8%, following a 23.7% increase in 2022 in Luxembourg. Some of these infections are asymptomatic, underlining the importance of systematic screening.

These figures call for continued mobilization. Access to early screening remains an essential lever for limiting the transmission of STIs, whether HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis or genital infections such as Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Trichomonas vaginalis.

An even greater challenge in Luxembourg

The aim of our approach is to improve existing services so that screening can be carried out as early as possible - a prerequisite for effective treatment and a reduction in contamination in the event of infection - by combining proximity and a simplified approach.

By way of illustration, France, which has been offering HIV screening since 2019, voted in September 2022 to extend free screening to all STIs for under-26s. This measure would also be essential in Luxembourg in view of the increase in the number of contaminations observed between 2021 and 2022 (+23.7% in the number of cases of STI with Chlamydia trachomatis) and the sometimes severe complications of these pathologies (infertility, ectopic pregnancy, etc.).

Luxembourg should therefore be able to offer screening all year round, without prescription and free of charge in all the country's medical analysis laboratories, as is already the case in other European countries such as France.

Access to tests using cutting-edge techniques, coupled with medical support, enables more sensitive and specific screening than over-the-counter self-tests, which suffer from performance shortcomings - www.autotest.lu

In the event of a positive result, medical support is systematically offered, unlike self-tests where the patient is left to face the result alone

Self-testing VS laboratory screening: how to choose?

Self-tests are freely available in Luxembourg. However, laboratory testing offers a number of advantages: more reliable results, earlier detection, often lower cost (e.g.: HIV laboratory test at €17) and, above all, real support so that you don't have to face the news of your positive test alone.

▶ Where can you get your results?

Results will be available on the secure MYLAB application.

📅 Events: our LABOMOBILEs come to meet you

n addition to our weekly visits to your communities, our LABOMOBILEs will also be visiting Luxembourg university campuses and Luxembourg City (Place de l'Europe and Place de Paris) to get even closer to you. We'll be carrying out the screenings mentioned above, and answering any questions you may have on the subject.
