The artist Jacques Schneider presents a place steeped in history.
For his grandmother, the National Strike Monument was much more than a symbol. It was a place of remembrance, a place that tells the story of his family.
The National Monument of the Strike
Imagine a whole country standing up against injustice, despite fear and repression.
This is exactly what the Luxembourgers did in August 1942, during the general strike against the Nazi occupier, particularly against compulsory military service.
This movement, which left Wiltz, spread to all of Luxembourg, but the price was heavy: 21 lives lost.
The monument, erected in slate by Wiltz and inaugurated in September 1956, tells this story.
Its lighthouse shape symbolizes the light of courage in the darkness.
On the street side, a relief in red sandstone illustrates David confronting Goliath, metaphor of the resistance against the Third Reich.
On the back, the strikers falling under the bullets in Hinzert’s camp recall the sacrifice of anonymous heroes.
Today, this place is not only a memorial: it is a living symbol of freedom, resistance and human rights.
A commemorative ceremony, organized every 31 August, honors these victims.
